A pool filter is a vital part of your pool’s circulation system, responsible for removing dirt. Without a properly functioning filter, your pool would quickly become dirty and unsafe to swim in. There are 3 main pool filters. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, so choosing the right one for your pool is important. Discover them here:

Sand Filters

Sand filters are the most common type of pool filter. They work by trapping dirt and debris in the sand as water passes through it. Sand filters require regular backwashing to remove the trapped dirt and debris from the sand. This can be a time-consuming and messy process, but it’s necessary to keep the filter working properly.

Advantages of sand filters:

-Easy to maintain

-Can be used with all types of pools

Disadvantages of sand filters:

-Can’t filter out very small particles

-Backwashing can waste a lot of water

-Sand needs to be replaced every few years

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters work by trapping dirt and debris in a pleated paper or fabric cartridge. Cartridge filters require less maintenance than sand filters, as they only need to be cleaned when the pressure gauge on the filter housing rises 8-10 psi above the starting level.

Advantages of cartridge filters:

-Traps smaller particles than sand filters

-Less maintenance than sand filters

-Longer lasting than sand filters

Disadvantages of cartridge filters:

-More expensive than sand filters

-Can be difficult to clean

Diatomaceous Earth Filters

D.E. filters work by trapping dirt and debris in a fine powder made from the fossilized remains of diatoms (a type of algae). D.E. filters require regular backwashing and the addition of D.E. powder to the filter chamber.

Advantages of D.E. filters:

-Traps smaller particles than sand or cartridge filters

-Good at removing algae from pool water

Disadvantages of D.E. filters:

-More expensive than sand or cartridge filters

-Maintenance can be time-consuming

-D.E. powder can be harmful if inhaled
